Catholic Private University Linz/Franz and Franziska Jaegerstaetter Institute
Upper Austria
The Franz and Franziska Jägerstätter Institute was founded in 2017 as a funded research institution at the Catholic Private University of Linz. Franz Jägerstätter refused to do military service for the Nazi regime out of religious conviction and was executed for this on August 9, 1943. His case was debated in church, society and politics for many decades. Today, he is one of the best-known conscientious objectors under National Socialism.
The Institute's tasks are:
- Publication of the digital Jägerstätter Edition
- Research on Franz and Franziska Jägerstätter and collection of documents relating to their lives
- Support of Jägerstätter commemorative work and development of pedagogical and didactic applications and projects
- Research regarding similar testimonies of resistance and ideological dissent during the era of National Socialism
- Research on the role and dynamics of religion, churches and faith under National Socialism and other authoritarian forms of rule
- Co-edition and coordination of the “Upper Austria Memory Book” project
