Cistercian Abbey Stift Heiligenkreuz

Lower Austria

Heiligenkreuz Abbey was founded by Markgraf Leopold III, Babenberger, in 1133 as a Cistercian monastery. It existed without interruption ever since. This results in a building complex that includes Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and modern parts. Around 100 Cistercians currently belong to the convent. The monastery complex can be seen by visitors.

Various collections have developed over the course of the abbey's history. These include manuscripts and incunabula from the 12th to the 15th century, a collection of coins and medals, a collection of sculptures and paintings, musical works and a collection of prints and drawings. The objects in these collections are worked up and digitised since several years, making them accessible to researchers and other interested parties.
