Historical library collections of the Monastery Vorau
The Online Collection of the Monastery Vorau
The Augustinian Monastery Vorau is a spiritual, cultural and economic centre of regional, national and international significance. As one of only three monasteries in Styria to have existed continuously since the Middle Ages, the Monastery Vorau has made a significant contribution to the academic and cultural life of Eastern Styria for eight centuries.
Eight centuries of accumulated knowledge
The Augustinian Monastery Vorau houses one of Austria's most significant historic monastic libraries. Its holdings include mediecal manuscripts, incunabula, historical prints and extensive collections in the fields of theology, philosophy and history. Since its foundation in 1163, the library has been continuously expanded, thus dokumenting not only the history of the monastery itself but also the development of education, science and scholarship in the Eastern Alpine region.
A living cultural heritage
Particularly in recent years, the Abbey has been increasingly focused on developing the cultural narrative of the Abbey and the region. As a result, new academic works on (art and architectural) history and life at the Abbey have been published, and a new book series, 'Libri Voraviensis', has been launched in collaboration with the special colelctions of Graz University Library. The aim here is to stimulate new research, which is then communicated throughout the region through media outreach and events.
In addition, storage facilities have been set up for the abbey's collection and the objects have been organised, catalogued and thus preserved from deterioration.
In this spirit, Monastery Vorau works to promote culture and tradition in the region and sees itself as a stabilising force in the preservation and dissemination of culture in and around the region.
