The nativity scene of St Mary's Cathedral Linz

A Sacred Masterpiece in 3D

In the crypt of St Mary’s Cathedral Linz stands one of the world’s largest and most remarkable nativity scenes, a work of not only artistic but also deep religious significance. This monumental creation was crafted by the Munich-based sculptor and artist Sebastian Osterrieder. Commissioned by Bishop Franz Doppelbauer, the result is a stunning piece of sacred art that tells the story of the birth of Christ in a unique way through finely carved figures and scenic paintings. Especially noteworthy is the artist’s extraordinary attention to detail, which even led him to travel to the Holy Land to portray the scenes with the greatest possible authenticity.

A comprehensive restoration

The nativity scene includes more than 80 finely carved figures made of limewood, created by Sebastian Osterrieder between 1907 and 1913. Among them are the Holy Family, numerous shepherds, and a wide variety of animals – all masterfully crafted and bearing witness to the artist’s remarkable attention to detail. After more than a century, the nativity scene underwent a comprehensive restoration to repair damage caused by time and environmental influences. Dust, mould, and discolouration were carefully removed, broken parts restored, and the nativity landscape along with the scenic paintings in the background meticulously conserved.

Experiencing the nativity scene digitally

Following its restoration, the nativity scene now shines in new splendour, and has also been brought to life in the digital realm. Through the digitisation of the intricately crafted figures, a completely new way of experiencing this remarkable work of art has become possible, offering deeper insight into the story and symbolism of the nativity.

The digitisation was carried out using state-of-the-art technology and in close collaboration with specialists who took on the challenge of capturing the figures in all their detail. Photogrammetry was used, with each figure scanned from multiple angles. This process enabled the creation of precise 3D models of the figures. The result is a digital collection that allows viewers to examine the nativity scene from every perspective and gain a deeper understanding of the theological and art-historical background of the individual figures.
The entire scene can now be explored in a unique 360-degree view, offering visitors an unprecedented, high-resolution encounter with this cultural treasure.
