Digital objects of the State Collections of Lower Austria

Insights into art, culture, archaeology and nature from Lower Austria

As a part of the Department of Art and Culture of the Office of the Federal Government of Lower Austria, the State Collections of Lower Austria manage the province's most significant movable asset: a museum collection comprising more than six million objects. These objects document Lower Austria's art, cultural, and natural history in an extraordinarily wide spectrum, reflecting both the past and the present.

Diversity of the State Collections of Lower Austria

The collections are divided into four major fields: nature, archaeology, art, and cultural history. These are further subdivided into twelve collection departments, offering an impressive diversity and range of exhibits.

The collection includes archaeological finds, zoological specimens, historical toys, historical and contemporary artworks, everyday objects, and items of great historical significance to the political history of Lower Austria and Austria.

The variety and heterogeneity of the objects make the State Collections a vibrant representation of the region's cultural and scientific development.

Digitised holdings in Kulturpool

As part of the project “Digitisation of Selected Museum Collections of the State Collections of Lower Austria”, portions of these extensive collections have been made available online via the Kulturpool platform.

Among them are holdings from two significant photographic collections: the estate of the artist Elfriede Mejchar, known particularly for her architectural photography, as well as photographs by Lothar Machura and Augustin Meisinger, who, in their work for Lower Austria, documented the region's natural and cultural landscapes.

This digitisation project is further enhanced by selected objects from Lower Austria’s cultural history, drawn from the ethnographic collection.

The insights are being expanded

The presentation of objects from the State Collections of Lower Austria in Kulturpool is continuously being expanded.
