Alban Berg Foundation
Vienna
Alban Berg (1885–1935) is one of the most important composers of classical modernism.
The establishment of the Alban Berg Foundation by his wife Helene Berg (1885–1976) in 1969 has enabled his estate to be kept intact, preserved in all its abundance and variety. From 1911 onwards, the couple lived in a rented flat at Trauttmansdorffgasse 27 in the Hietzing district of Vienna for around a quarter of a century, until the composer’s untimely death. For the rest of her life – over 40 years – Berg’s widow devoted herself to preserving her husband’s legacy.
It is due to her dedication that his study in their flat, with its extensive library, was given protected status by the Austrian Federal Monuments Authority as a unified collection in 1951, and was able to survive to this day.
