Online-Archiv der Arbeiterzeitung

Vienna

The online archive of the “Arbeiterzeitung” offers digital browsing and full-text search across more than 200,000 daily newspaper pages from 1945 to 1989. When arbeiterzeitung.at launched in 2004, it was Europe’s first open online archive of postwar newspapers on the World Wide Web. Andy Kaltenbrunner and his media consulting assumed the rights and responsibility for this non-commercial project. Together with Andreas Scharf and the research team at Medienhaus Wien, he manages and finances the archive. By 2021, the archive had delivered 35 million articles through more than 2 million online searches related to contemporary history.

After a technically caused interruption, the archive was successfully relaunched in 2025 thanks to EU funding under the “NextGenerationEU” program. Now even more comprehensive than before, the archive is once again freely available to all interested users. www.arbeiterzeitung.at is operated by Medienhaus Wien, an independent research and educational institution specializing in journalism and media studies.
