The basis wien Archive and Documentation Centre holds a unique collection of artists’ materials, ephemera, publications, and written records relating to art and its reception within the context of contemporary visual art in Austria.

The continuous collection and cataloguing of these objects since 1997, their publication through the online database www.basis-wien.at, as well as the institution’s ongoing engagement with questions of archiving and documenting contemporary visual art, form the core area of its work. It therefore follows that the question of dealing with estates of visual artists also became of particular importance. The photographic estate of Brigitte Aloise Roth (1953-2018) has been preserved in the archive of basis wien since 2021 and, through the project for the digitisation of cultural heritage, has been catalogued and largely digitised.
