Diocesan Archive Graz-Seckau

The archive of the Diocese of Graz-Seckau stores the files and charters of the bishopric and the Episcopal Ordinariate. The holdings range from the early 13th century to the present day. The archive depots, in which more than 6,500 linear metres of archival materials are stored, are haused together with the other archive rooms in the building of the Graz Seminary in the old town of Graz.

An important additional assignment is the accession in trust of historical archival fonds and register books of Styrian parishes and their description and appraisal. Currently the registers of 288 and the archives of 248 of the 388 Styrian parishes are in the depots in Graz.

The library of the Diocese is affiliated to the archive and contains more than 40.000 books, mainly prior to the year 1900. The archive and the library are at disposal of the diocesan administration and can be used for any scientific research too.

In the "dh@GS – digital heritage@Graz-Seckau" project, 10,000 archival materials from the holdings of the archive of the Diocese of Graz-Seckau (DAGS) were digitized and made available online. The documents date from around 1200 to 1900 and are of particular value for historical research, church history and musicology in Styria.
