DomQuartier Salzburg
Salzburg
A place of experience in the heart of the Salzburg UNESCO World Heritage site
The DomQuartier was founded in order to bring to life the historic centre of political and ecclesiatical power in Salzburg, allowing visitors to experience it as formerly only the prince-archbishop and a select few were able to do. In its distinctive approach, the DomQuartier embodies the exceptional universal value of Salzburg as a World Heritage site. The important role played by Salzburg in the exchange between Italian and German cultures is evident in urban planning, art and architecture. Italian (early) baroque ambience still characterises the local identity, as vividly exemplified by the DomQuartier. At the same time, the ensemble of Cathedral, Residenz and St Peter‘s Archabbey represents the hub of this notable European ecclesiastical principality.
Furthermore, as an authentic concert venue where Wolfgang Amadé Mozart himself composed and performed, the DomQuartier occupies an outstanding place in the history of music. Today, concerts in the original location allow visitors to experience the music in the true historical acoustic conditions. Thus history comes alive as a sensory experience in the DomQuartier: a platform for select musical events and the authentic heart of Salzburg‘s World Heritage site.
The architectural sequence of spaces, created during the Baroque period, linking the Prince-Archbishop's Residence, the Cathedral and St Peter's Abbey comprises the following collections of secular and sacred art: the State Rooms of the Salzburg Residence Gallery, the Salzburg Cathedral Museum and the St Peter's Museum.
