equalizent ST GmbH is a Vienna-based social enterprise dedicated to the empowerment and visibility of the Austrian Deaf community. At the heart of our work stands the Vienna experience exhibition "Hands Up – Erlebnis Stille", which is being extended through the HandsUp digital project with a systematic documentation of Austrian Sign Language (ÖGS).

Our collecting focus on Kulturpool is a collection of more than 1,600 ÖGS signs, presented as 3D-animated videos with German subtitles. ÖGS has been recognised as UNESCO cultural heritage since 2013; the collection documents it for research, education and cultural outreach.

A language that won't fit on a shelf

How do you document a language whose words are made of movement? The HandsUp animation library preserves more than 1,600 signs of Austrian Sign Language as videos of a 3D avatar, with German subtitles and under a Creative Commons licence for free re-use by schools, museums and research.
