Women’s Museum Hittisau

Vorarlberg

The Frauenmuseum Hittisau, Austria's Women's Museum, is the only women's museum in Austria and worldwide the only one in a rural region. Founded in 2000, it showcases the cultural achievements of women and women's herstory in changing exhibitions. Each year, one or two exhibitions on topics related to architecture, history, culture, the environment and everyday life are presented from a feminist perspective. In this way, the museum demonstrates how feminist cultural thinking can also be effective outside urban centres.

The museum's collection includes objects and documents on women's history and culture within and outside the region, on everyday life, political history and art by women. Parts of the collection are organised as a ‘displaced collection’: objects are temporarily loaned to the museum for research and documentation and then returned to their original context, enriched with knowledge, memory and value.
