Vienna

The Jewish Museum Vienna, founded in 1895 as the world’s first Jewish Museum, is a central place for Jewish history and culture in the Austrian capital. It houses one of the largest Judaica collections worldwide and preserves the heritage of what was once the third-largest Jewish community in Europe. After being closed by the Nazis in 1938, it was reopened in 1988. Today, the museum showcases the diversity of Jewish life and the relationship between Jewish and non-Jewish communities through exhibitions, events, and educational programs. It actively combats antisemitism and discrimination, promotes tolerance and democracy, and serves as an accessible, sustainable space for remembrance and dialogue.
