Kuratorium Pfahlbauten

Association for the Curatorship of Pile Dwellings

Vienna

Kuratorium Pfahlbauten is the national management organization for the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps" in Austria. It is responsible for the protection, research, and interpretation of five World Heritage sites on the lakes Attersee, Mondsee, and Keutschacher See. Through the project "Surfaced—The Digital Pile Dwellings," objects in collaboration with museums and collections were digitised, making them accessible to the public.

These 3D models and documents are available in the PfahlbauKompass, a web application that functions as a "digital museum," providing an overview of the material heritage of this World Heritage site in Austria. In addition to this digitization work, a small research collection is maintained, and they collaborate closely with heritage conservation authorities, regional museums, universities, and international partners. The focus is on public participation and communicating prehistoric cultural heritage to a broad audience.
