Museum der Moderne Salzburg

Salzburg

An internationally recognised art museum for all – at the pulse of time and for a diverse society. The Museum der Moderne Salzburg collects, preserves, researches, displays, and communicates the art of the 20th and 21st centuries. With its two locations on the Mönchsberg and in the Rupertinum in the Old Town, it positions itself as a dynamic cultural forum in the heart of Europe. It fosters interdisciplinary dialogue between the arts and serves as a place of encounter and discussion.

The museum manages approximately 55,000 works, spanning back to the 19th century, with a focus on graphic art, photography, and figurative art. In addition to its own collection, it also cares for works from the State of Salzburg and the federal photography collection. The expressionist depiction of the human condition has shaped the history of the collection, as has the growing consideration of contemporary international perspectives. As a centre of expertise for Austrian photography after 1945, the museum holds a significant collection.
