Mauthausen Memorial

Today, the Mauthausen Memorial is an international place of remembrance and historical and political education. It preserves the memory of the victims, researches and documents the history of the Mauthausen concentration camp and its more than 40 subcamps and enables visitors to engage with the history of the concentration camp through exhibitions and educational programmes.

One of the central tasks of the Mauthausen Memorial is to bring together, secure, catalogue and systematise the surviving camp-related sources and other sources on the history of the camp that only emerged after liberation in one place and to make them accessible to the public as well as for the Memorial's own research efforts.

Material traces of violence

The Mauthausen Memorial is a former crime scene, a place of remembrance, a cemetery for the remains of thousands of people murdered here, and a place of political and historical education. It has extensive collections of documents, photographs, oral history interviews, books and artefacts. Numerous items in the collection originate from archaeological investigations on the grounds of the former Mauthausen concentration camp and its satellite camps. 600 archaeological finds - ranging from everyday objects to architectural remains - have been digitised for Kulturpool.
