Museum of the Celts in Hallein

Salzburg

The Museum of the Celts in Hallein is one of the largest museums of Celtic history and art in Europe. The prehistory of Salzburg and the history of Hallein are also brought to life here. The combination of Iron Age burial grounds, settlement areas and salt mining on the Duerrnberg mountain is unique in Europe. Accessible tunnels, insights into burial chambers, ornate gold jewellery - the art and culture of the Celts can be experienced in the Museum of the Celts in Hallein.

The absolute highlight is the 2,500-year-old Celtic beaked jug from Duerrnberg with its mythical beasts of prey and demons. A separate exhibition on the ground floor of the building takes visitors on a journey back in time to Salzburg's prehistory. In addition, three archiepiscopal prince's rooms from 1756/57 and objects relating to the history of Hallein and the historic salt industry are on display.
