The Austrian Archaeological Institute (OeAI) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) is Austria's largest research institution in the field of archaeology and classical studies. Its core task is to study the history of mankind from the Quaternary period (starting 2.6 million years ago) to modern times, taking into account material archaeological sources and written records. Its researchers are working on around 200 projects in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Based in Vienna, the institute has branch offices in Athens, Cairo, Ephesos and Krems and has been in charge of the excavations in Ephesos for 130 years. With its excellent laboratory equipment, diverse expertise and interdisciplinary approach, the OeAI is regarded as a centre of top international archaeological research.
