Volkskundemuseum Wien

Vienna

The Volkskundemuseum Wien (Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art) is one of Europe’s major ethnographic museums and home to extensive collections on folk art as well as historical and contemporary European everyday culture. The museum’s collection comprises over 162,000 objects and 277,000 photographs. A library containing 152,000 items and the archives of the museum and the association behind it complete the holdings.

The Volkskundemuseum Wien serves as an open space for research, information and education. It is a place for experimenting and trying out new things. In all its operations, the museum adopts vibrant, at times challenging approaches. It allows for social interaction, networking and exchange.

The programme shines a light on different aspects of coexistence in a constantly changing world. No exhibitions are currently taking place due to the renovation of the Schönborn Garden Palais. The museum will reopen in June 2026.
