What is metadata?
Metadata provides additional descriptive information
Every sculpture has a creator, every painting a technique and an era. Additional information, or metadata, such as the title of a work, the name of the artist, the author of a text, the year of publication or creation or information on size or material is provided to ensure the discoverability of all of the objects in Kulturpool.
The metadata of each individual digital object is curated by the individual participating institutions themselves and entered into a database, which is in turn sent to Kulturpool. Our partner institutions follow common standards that define vocabularies (predefined category lists) or specific date formats to ensure a consistent quality of the data gathered.
Metadata not only describes the properties of the original object, but also the digital object itself. The metadata in Kulturpool also contains information on usage rights as well as the media type (Image, Text, Video, Sound, 3D) and the provider of the original.
Metadata helps you search for digital objects
If you are looking for old photographs in Kulturpool, the metadata will help you easily find suitable digital objects. If you select the object types “Photography” and “Photo” in the filter selection, you will only get results that have those words in their metadata. This function allows you to narrow your search across a number of institutions to focus on specific attributes or areas of interest.
Try the filters!
Have you already tried searching for specific periods in Kulturpool? In the search, you can select periods that you find particularly interesting using the filter “Date”.
