Upper Austria

The Färbermuseum Gutau is located in a historic dyer’s house from the 18th century, where dyeing and the traditional production of indigo blue print (Blaudruck) were still actively practiced until 1968. Today, the museum presents the cultural and economic history of the dyeing trade in the Mühlviertel region, with a particular focus on hand-crafted blue printing.

The exhibition features original workshops, tools, and materials, as well as the individual steps involved in dyeing with indigo and producing Blaudruck. A central highlight is a more than 300-year-old, still functional mangle, which is among the most impressive exhibits.

The museum sees itself as a vibrant place of traditional craftsmanship, vividly conveying the techniques and background of blue printing. Its program is complemented by guided tours and events such as the annual dyers’ market, which showcases the region’s textile cultural heritage.
